Why SEO takes time at all
A customer looking for a roofer or a plumber searches for a job and a place: roof repairs and their town, boiler service and their town. Google answers with the pages it has already found, read and learned to trust, and a new page starts with none of that. So every page goes through the same stages: found, indexed, shown a few times low on the results, shown more as it is clicked and linked, and only then placed where a customer taps it.
- Found and indexed: Google has the page and has read it as itself
- Shown, then clicked: the page appears for the search, then gets chosen
- The enquiry: a phone tap, a WhatsApp tap or a quote form, counted
Each stage leaves its own line in Search Console, which is why we can say which stage a page is at instead of guessing. An impression is the page being shown, and is never reported as a search or an enquiry.
How long SEO takes, stage by stage: what we do and what we read
Most answers to this question give a range of months and stop. A range is the writer's estimate, and it says nothing about your site. What can be said is what happens in each stage and what we look at to know a page has reached it.
The first week
The site is built and live in four to seven days: a page for each kind of work in each town, titles written for the searches, the schema, the sitemap submitted and the enquiry tracking live from the first day.
The first weeks
Google finds and indexes the pages. We check each address was indexed as itself, because a page Google has misread can sit unseen for months. Then the first impressions appear: a page shown for a job and a town.
The first months
The trade and town pages earn impressions, then clicks, as they climb. We read every page's own line each month, rewrite a title that is shown and not clicked, and add the next pages the searches justify.
After that
The enquiries follow the clicks and are counted: phone taps, WhatsApp taps and quote forms. We judge a page at about six weeks and decide on it at about twelve. One with nothing to show is improved, not left.
What makes SEO faster or slower for a trade business
A new domain against an old one
A domain that has been live for years, with other sites linking to it, carries trust a new one has to earn. A new domain is not a reason to wait. It is a reason to build the pages early and give them the time.
How many firms compete in the town
In a town with a handful of roofers, a page written for that town can move quickly. In a city where dozens compete, the same page sits lower for longer, and the towns around the city bring the early wins.
The Google Business Profile
The map results are their own race. A profile set up as a service-area business, with the towns listed and reviews coming in, can bring calls before the website's pages have climbed. The two together are what local SEO is.
How fast the pages are added
A page for each kind of work in each town gives Google more to rank than one services page. Pages live in the first weeks start earning in the first weeks; pages drip-fed over a year start a year late.
Whether the site is left alone
The slowest sites are the ones nobody touches after launch. A title shown and not clicked, a page never indexed, a sitemap still listing old addresses: each is a month lost if nobody reads the data.
Whether the page is the right kind
A service page will not rank for a search Google answers with cost guides, and an article will not rank for one it answers with service pages. We read the results before we write, so each page is the type that can win.
What you see in the monthly report while it builds
Impressions come before clicks, and clicks before the call. The report shows which stage each page is at.
Once a month you get one page: what went live, what each page did in Search Console, and the enquiries the site took, counted as phone taps, WhatsApp taps and quote forms, against your own baseline. Early on the report is mostly the first two lines: pages live, pages indexed, the first impressions and clicks. Later the third line is the one that matters, and the one we are judged on.
enquiries in one month on one client's site, counted as phone taps, WhatsApp taps and quote forms. How every figure is counted is on the results page.
What to do while the SEO builds
The months before the pages climb are not idle months.
Get the Business Profile working
Set up as a service-area business, the towns listed, a review asked for after every finished job. It can bring calls from the map results while the website is still being found.
Run ads for the urgent work if you need it now
Google Ads puts you at the top of the results today for a cost per click. Our guide to SEO or Google Ads covers when to run both and when to let the ads fall away.
Keep sending the photos
A finished job in a named town is what a town page needs to be more than a template with the name swapped. The pages we add are written from what you did there.
Know who else is in your lane
We take one business of each kind in an area, so a roofer working with us never competes with another roofer we work for. Ask any company you talk to the same.
These stages are what our local SEO service runs on the websites we build for trade businesses. The care plans are on the pricing page, from €79 to €999 a month, and a new site is quoted in writing within 24 hours. Questions about how long SEO takes
How long does it take for a new website to show up on Google?
Google finds a new site in the weeks after launch once the sitemap is submitted and the pages are linked, and the first impressions follow. Showing up is not ranking: the page appears low on the results first and climbs as it is clicked and trusted. We check every new address in Search Console was indexed as itself, because a page Google has misread can sit unseen for months.
How long does local SEO take for a plumber or an electrician?
The same stages as any trade: live, indexed, shown, clicked, enquiries. What changes is the competition in each town and how urgent the work is. Emergency searches are often won in the map results by the Business Profile before the website climbs, so for an urgent trade the profile and the reviews come first and the town pages follow.
Why is my website getting impressions but no clicks?
The page is being shown but not chosen. Usually the title and description do not match what the person typed, or the page sits too low for anyone to scroll to it. The fix is a title in the words of the search and a page of the type Google rewards for it. If the clicks are there and the enquiries are not, our guide to visits without enquiries covers that.
Can SEO be made faster for a trade business?
Some of it. The pages can be built and indexed in the first weeks rather than drip-fed, a title can be fixed the month it is shown and not clicked, and the Business Profile can bring calls while the pages climb. What cannot be hurried is Google's trust in a page, which comes from being shown, clicked and linked over time. Anyone promising a position by a date is guessing, or is paying for ads.
How long should I give an SEO company before judging it?
Judge the work monthly and the results by stage: in the first month, the pages live and indexed; in the months after, impressions and then clicks on each page's own line; after that, enquiries counted as phone taps, WhatsApp taps and quote forms. We judge a page at about six weeks and decide on it at about twelve. A company that cannot show you the Search Console line for each page it built is asking you to take its word.
